Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger Call It Quits

Call me silly, but I didn’t see this one coming. Yesterday, it was announced that journalist Maria Shriver and the former governator Arnold Schwarzenegger are calling it quits. The couple has been married for 25 years, but they’ve been together even longer than that. They were introduced by Tom Brokaw in 1977. After about nine years of dating, the seemingly unusual couple married on April 26, 1986 in Hyannis, Massachusetts. They seemed like an odd couple because at the time, Schwarzenegger was a body builder turned actor who supported the Republican Party. Shriver, daughter of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, was a … Continue reading

CDC Notes Increase in Number Of Children With ADHD

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have done a study that reveals that there has been an increase in the number of children who are being diagnosed with ADHD. There may be some speculation as to the reasons why this is so. I have noticed an ongoing debate, of sorts, regarding ADHD. There are those who believe that ADHD is something that has been around long before the name of the disorder was attached to it and that people were just unaware of it. Then, there are those who believe that ADHD is something new, and that some factor … Continue reading

Charles Taylor, Naomi Campbell, and Blood Diamonds

First off, you may be thinking “Who is Charles Taylor?” Taylor is the former president of Liberia. Lest you think Taylor is a good guy, let me give you a little background. Taylor was educated at Bentley College in the U.S. before returning to his native Liberia to work for the government. When they found out he was embezzling money, he fled to Libya and became a guerilla. He came back to Liberia in the late ‘80s and overthrew the government that he had fled from with a civil war. He then took control of the country and was eventually … Continue reading

King of Pop Michael Jackson Dead at 50

My pop culture head is literally spinning. When Ed McMahon passed away a few days ago, I was sad, but I knew many young readers wouldn’t remember Ed other than his financial problems of late. When Farrah Fawcett passed away today, again, I was sad, but knew that she was not in good shape. While still trying to blog about Farrah, a friend told me Michael Jackson was dead. It was being reported by TMZ, but I wasn’t sure how much faith to put in that. Now, both the AP and NBC have confirmed that the singer died after being … Continue reading

John Travolta and Kelly Preston’s Son Jett Dies

Wow, what a tragedy for the Travolta family – their 16 year old son Jett died today while the family, which includes eight year old daughter Ella Bleu, was celebrating the New Year in the Bahamas. While at the family vacation home at the Old Bahama Bay Hotel on Grand Bahama Island, Jett suffered a seizure. Photo, from the 1976 film Boy in the Plastic Bubble, is in the public domain because the copyright has expired. He hit his head on the bathtub and was found unconscious by a caretaker around 10 a.m. this morning. Medical responders attempted to revive … Continue reading

More and More Black Families Homeschooling

When I wrote On Being an African American Homeschooler some time back, I wrote about how being a black homeschooler could be a lonely endeavor. I also dicussed reasons why more blacks did not homeschool such as cultural pressure, economic reasons, and educational background and how those factors kept African Americans in school despite of a huge achievement gap between blacks and white. Just two years later and the tide is beginning to turn. For the same reasons that I mentioned in the previous article, more and more black families are making the sacrifice to teach their kids at home. … Continue reading

Uma Gets Engaged and Kimora Gets the Kids

Just weeks before her ex-husband’s lover is due to give birth to her children’s new half-sibling (got that) Uma Thurman has gotten a massive rock and a wedding proposal. Thurman is officially engaged to her Swiss multimillionaire boyfriend, Arpad “Arki” Busson, according to her rep. New York’s Daily News was the first to report the engagement adding that the actress has always wanted to add to her family, but unlike her ex, Ethan Hawke, who impregnated the couple’s former nanny she plans to do it the old-fashioned way—after she is legally wed. As for the bling that Thurman is now … Continue reading

A Kid in King Arthur’s Court (1995)

We all remember the old movie about a Connecticut Yankee going back in time to King Arthur’s court, right? Well, “A Kid in King Arthur’s Court” is a contemporary twist on the old classic, this time taking a kid out of the middle of his basketball game and landing him in Camelot. Calvin Fuller (Thomas Ian Nichols) is a young man who just can’t seem to get a hit when he’s at bat. His little sister has branded him a loser and he’s not feeling too confident about himself when he steps up to the plate. He strikes out and … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: Free Gas, It’s a Gas, and a Ghastly Sight

FREE GAS It doesn’t get much cheaper than free, right? Then again, is anything in life truly free? You can ponder that while you are trying to win 9,000 gallons of gas from a West Virginia casino. Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack is offering guests who are considering canceling their summer road trip due to record high gas prices the chance to walk away with fuel that is estimated to be worth more than $30,000. It’s no joke. The casino is giving away a tanker of fuel to one lucky person on April 18th. Players can earn entries for the grand prize … Continue reading

Saving Neverland

Ah, just when you thought O.J. and Britney’s antics would keep the Gloved One out of the news, he returns. Michael Jackson was facing losing his beloved ranch Neverland in Santa Ynez, Califonia earlier this week. The King of Pop owed an amazing $24.5 million on the 2,500 acre ranch, but has since worked out a private deal Fortress Investment Group, LLC to keep his property, which was set to be auctioned off on March 19th. Originally owned by William Bone, Michael bought the Neverland Ranch in 1988 and for a while, it was the happiest place on Earth, well, … Continue reading
